Have you ever gotten the chance to put your ear up to a conch shell? There is something special that happens. If you listen closely you can hear the sound of the ocean. What a refreshing sound after putting up with another long Michigan winter.
Contrary to childhood fantasy the ocean is not trapped inside the shell. When the shell is placed over our ear it blocks out all other noise and becomes a resonating chamber where air flows in a similar way as the oceans movement. We actually hear small noises, body sounds, and air movements that the brain has learned to tune out.
Too often in the midst of the craziness of life we don’t take the time to stop and listen. If we were honest; when was the last time we read God’s word and allowed time afterwards to think and pray about what we read. When we truly listen to God’s word; it’s not only exciting like the child holding the shell to their ear, but it is refreshing to our souls.
“And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.” (I Kings 19:11&12)
“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears (listens to) my word and believes Him who sent me has eternal life…” (John 5:24)
Take time to enjoy “being still” with the Lord today. Feel His word resonate within the chambers of your heart and refresh your Spirit.
